Youve probably heard the term “Superfood” somewhere, but what does it actually mean? Superfoods are whole foods that are packed with an abundance of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals…and have the power to improve your levels of energy, performance, and physical and mental health.

These 5 foods have earned the title of “Superfood” for their extremely high content of disease fighting and body optimizing nutrition.

And all of these foods are very versatile, and there’s many ways to incorporate these foods into your diet.

1. Raw Cacao Powder

We’ve all likely heard that chocolate can be good for us. But the reason for that, is the cacao that is used to make the chocolate. Subtract all the artificial ingredients and processed sugars, and you’ll be left with one of the most antioxidant rich superfoods on the planet…Cacao.

Although the medicinal power of Cacao has been known for thousands of years, it has recently blown up in recent years as a superfood that everyone is starting to include in their diets, for a good reason too.

The Cacao bean has over 300 nutritional compounds including vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and amino acids. It has high levels of magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, beta carotene, and omega 6 fatty acids.

A serving of Cacao which is just 1 tbsp, packs about 20 times more Antioxidants than blueberries, which is also considered to be one of the most antioxidant rich foods on the planet.

Cacao also acts as a natural mood enhancer. Containing natural euphoric compounds called anandamide and tryptophan. (Which is why chocolate makes you so happy)

How to use Cacao?

  • Add it to smoothies
  • Make a hot cacao drink
  • Make Home Made Cacao Bars

2. Blueberries

Another antioxidant rich powerhouse of a fruit, blueberries are commonly known to be one of the best foods to eat if youre looking to lose weight and increase your levels of health.

These little guys are full of disease fighting phytochemical’s and antioxidant’s, as well as vitamin C, K, and maganese.

But if possible, opt for organic and locally farmed blueberries to ensure youre getting the most clean and chemical free produce!
How To Use?

  • Add it to your salads
  • blend it up in your smoothies
  • throw it in your bowl of oats
  • enjoy it fresh or frozen as a sweet snack

3. Flax Seeds

Flax Seeds are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids, making them one of the most powerful foods to reduce inflammation, protect against cancer and diabetes, improve joint health, and also enhance brain function.

The high protein and fiber content in flax seeds also make it a great food for those looking to lose fat and increase lean muscle.

Along with the protein, fiber, and omega 3s…Flax seeds contain high levels of thiamine, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese, making them one of the healthiest things you can put in your body.

4. Bone Broth

This one may seem odd, but bone broth, which is brewed from the bones of cow, chicken, and sometimes fish bones. Bone broth contains collagen, and other nutrients and minerals that are essential for the body.

Bone broth is commonly used to improve digestive function and heal the gut, because of the amino acids that come from the bone cartilage. But the benefits also include improved sleep, fat loss, and joint protection.

How to use?

  • make a green smoothie with it (not as gross as you might think)
  • make a soup with it
  • or drink it straight (I do this, just hold your nose haha)

5. Avocados

The last on the list of superfoods to supercharge your health, is a favorite amongst many more so for its delicious taste, but it is also one of the healthiest fruits you can eat.

Avocados are full of fats that are good for heart health, hormonal balance, and brain function. It is also high in folate, vitamin c and calcium, and also contains more potassium than a banana, which makes this green and deliscious fruit such a powerful superfood.

We all likely have gotten very creative with avocado and have learned many ways to use it, but here are some of my favorite.

  • Top it on a salad
  • Add it to a smoothie
  • Make avocado moose

Enjoy this as a super food smoothie as well!
